OUR ED BIEN, A 1939 GRADUATE OF ST. BENEDICTS INTRODUCED FATHER LEAHY WHO IS A 1963 GRADUATE. FATHER EDWIN LEAHY DISCUSSED HOW SUCCESS COMES TO URBAN STUDENTS AT ST. BENEDICT'S PREP.  THE KEYS ARE DEVELOPING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND LEGECY- A CONNECTION TO ALUMNI.  ST. BENEDICT'S PREP CLOSED IN 1972 DUE TO DEMOGRAPHICS AND A LACK OF STUDENTS.  IT WAS SOON REOPENED UNDER FATHER LEAHY AS HEADMASTER AND HAS SHOWN GREAT SUCCESS WITH 98% OF ITS STUDENTS GOING TO COLLEGE.  THE PREP SCHOOL (9TH THROUGH 12TH GRADES) CONSISTS OF 460 STUDENTS.  THEY ALL WEAR SCHOOL UNIFORMS WHICH HAVE TO BE EARNED AND ARE ORGANIZED ALONG MILITARY LINES-  GROUPS AND SECTIONS WITH STUDENT LEADERS AND ASSISTANT LEADERS.  MOST OF THE STUDENTS CANNOT AFFORD THE TUITION, BUT ARE SUPPORTED BY ALUMNI AND LOCAL BUSINESSES.  STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED TO MAKE DECISIONS AND LEARN FROM MISTAKES.  THEY GAIN SUPPORT FROM THEIR CONNECTION TO ALUMNI.  THEY DEVELOP SCHOOL SPIRIT SINGING BOLA BOLA IN THE HALLWAYS.  THEY LEARN TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER DURING VERBAL TESTING, INSURING SUCCESS OF ALL.
